Atmosic Unveils the Ultra-Low-Power ATM34/e System-on-Chip, Adding Thread and Matter Support

Succeeding the ATM3 and ATM33/e range, the new ATM34/e series includes Bluetooth Low Energy and IEEE 802.15.4 support.

Ultra-low-power Internet of Things (IoT) specialist Atmosic has announced an upcoming new system-on-chip family, sampling this quarter, which builds on its ATM3 and ATM33/e series to add IEEE 802.15.4 support, with Zigbee, Thread, and Matter compatibility, to its existing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) capabilities: the ATM34/e series.

The ATM34/e family introduces a new scalable memory architecture, Atmosic says, allowing for greater flexibility in memory footprint depending on application requirements and cost targets. Regardless of RAM, each chip in the family comes with an Arm Cortex-M33F core running at 64MHz, plus support for the company's TrustZone security technology.

As an Atmosic product, the ultra-low-power parts also support energy harvesting — offering what the company describes as a "wide harvesting input range" with support for "a wide range of storage devices," including support for harvesting energy from radio-frequency, heat, light, and motion sources. To boost battery life further, the radio can be tuned to transmit in a power range of 20dBm to +10dBm and draws just 1mA in receive mode — half that of the competition, the company claims.

It's the chips' support for IEEE 802.15.4 connectivity which makes them stand out from their stablemates, though. Coming in addition to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) compatibility, and available as a drop-in upgrade for projects already using earlier Atmosic chips, the ATM34/e is compatible with Zigbee, Thread, and the new Matter smart home interoperability protocol.

The new chips, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas today, are due to begin sampling this quarter, Atmosic has confirmed; pricing and general availability have not yet been disclosed. More information on the company's current line-up, yet to be updated to include the ATM34/e range, is available on the Atmosic website.
