An In-Wall Charging Station and Dual-Monitor Display Setup for Your Home

Keep your life and devices organized with this built-in electronics installation.

When you walk into many modern homes, you’ll see some sort of disorganized space for phone/other device charging. These same people probably have work and personal appointments split between different calendar apps and actual paper. Maybe they even have a home security system installed in another location, scattering control of their schedule and gadgets in a variety of locations.

Flemming Sørvollen Skaret, however, has a different solution. When he built a new kitchen in 2018, he also added a new wall. Instead of simply using the typical lumber, drywall, and electrical connections, this hacker decked out one section of it with dual 22” monitors, a dedicated charging area, and accommodations for Z-Wave home security sensors.

The (disassembled) monitors are mounted one on top of another, with a tasteful frame for each that makes them look like mounted pictures. Each is powered by its own Raspberry Pi 3B+, with the top one running MagicMirror² and the bottom displaying a Chromium browser Home-Assistant in full screen.

Below that, the same sort of frame is used for the charging station, which can be used with phones, FitBits, power banks, earplugs, and the like. While it seems that you always need just one more outlet/USB connection, perhaps Skaret actually has this problem figured out.

On the other hand, he has further plans for improving the dual-monitor setup, so, as with most projects of this type, it may never be entirely done. Although you probably won’t construct something exactly like this, it’s great inspiration for organizing your gadgets and/or “completing” that nice-to-have home electronics project that has been on the list for a while!
