After seeing Martin Mander’s Google AIY intercom, hacker “keebie81,” or “Stuff With Kirby” on YouTube, thought that he could replicate this feat with Amazon Alexa. Since he had an Amazon Dash Wand lying around, he decided to strip this down and stuff it inside of an old intercom he found at an estate sale to make his new gadget.

Most of the electronics inside the intercom were removed to make room for the Dash Wand hardware, and the main circuit board was modified to trigger the device when the “talk” button is pressed.

Now he can easily ask questions or control home automation items like the TV and thermostat at the press of a button. (📷: Stuff With Kirby)

The unit is positioned in such a way that the blue LEDs shine through the speaker grate, creating a pleasing glow — as seen in the video below. If you’d like to try your own Alexa intercom hack, be sure to check out the project’s write-up.
