Add a Pi-Powered Speedometer to Your Longboard

If you’d like to cruise from location to location, and don’t need the ability to do various tricks, then a longboard is a great choice. Since you’re not going to be abusing the bottom of your board or its trucks, you can even add extra electronics hardware, such as a Raspberry Pi-powered speedometer.

In his project write-up, PierreDM goes through how to build one of these boards, including actually making the deck out of 15mm multiplex wood, and engraving your personal design on it with a laser cutter.

Importantly, he also embeds a Raspberry Pi and LCD screen to show how fast you’re going, read using a Hall effect sensor and a magnet attached to one of the wheels. If the display doesn’t work for you, this setup can even generate a webpage that you can log onto and view your stats!
