If you’d like to make a pattern on wood automatically, you might turn to a laser engraver or even a CNC router. However, there’s no reason that the art of wood burning couldn’t be computer controlled, as Tucker Shannon shows in this set of images.

The machine features a turntable-like design along with a ‘pen thing’ that burns images into wood. (📷: Tucker Shannon)

His build consists of a rotating table and a single-axis gantry, reminiscent of a record player, that allows the wood burner to travel outwards and spin to scorch images using a ‘pen thing.’

The electronics are housed inside of a handmade pine box, which include a Raspberry Pi, a salvaged power supply unit, and stepper motor controllers to coordinate the movement of each axis.

So just how good is the CNC Wood Burner? You can find pics of its finished pieces here and catch a glimpse of it in action below!
