Hoverboards were quite the craze several years ago. While they can certainly be fun to ride as-is, they feature two powerful motor-wheel assemblies and control electronics that make them an excellent platform for hacking and modification.

As shown in the video below, MakerMan decided to create a 4WD platform, using hub wheels salvaged from two broken hoverboards, along with control PCBs, and even cutoffs from the main swivel assembly. The platform itself is constructed with square tubing and a metal top, which features bump patterns to help the human rider stay on.

Power is provided by custom 36V battery pack made from old laptop cells, and an RC transmitter and receiver setup enables the system to be driven independently or with a human standing on it.

As noted in the video description, the platform could be integrated into many different robotics projects, and is able to carry an impressive load of 250Kg (~550lb) or more. Perhaps even more impressive is the demo shown at 1:23, where MakerMan hooks it up to a rather substantial vehicle, and is actually able to tow it! It's a neat project, and a good reminder of to check out the used/broken market for hoverboards if you need a substantial amount of power and torque for a project!
