got your points. However, using a Pi or AWS IoT is most appropriate if you want to reach out for a physical endpoint like a sensor or actuator. What you did is not wrong but somehow unusual and inefficient. You go from a physical device (Echo) to software (Lambda, IoT) back to physical device (RPi) back to software (yowsup, WhatsApp). Things would change if there is an actual benefit from having the Pi in that chain - e.g. making it light up an LED when a message is sent out to WhatsApp.
If you deploy your software solution from your Pi to an EC2 instance (or else) you have several options to access yowsup from within a Lambda function (SNS/SQS, REST, S3 or even MQTT like you did).
I don't want to blame your project at all. Without looking under the hood this skill rocks ;)
the overall concept of combining Alexa with yowsup is awesome yet I don't understand the IoT integration? Is there a specific reason for using yowsup on a Pi instead of running the client on EC2 or similar infrastructure?
