This PSoC 4200 project and the ILI9341 Color TFT SPI 2.2 inch display total just under $10. Wow! Do I hear a witness?
Yes, color is available for darn near any project at a reasonable cost. I took one of the examples from the element14 http://www.element14.com/community/thread/23736/l/100-projects-in-100-days and whittled-it down to size as a stepping stone for future projects. The original library was in Russian and I spent a good deal of time with Google Translate in my attempts to streamline the library use for text. However, the full library code is available if you wish to venture off into graphics land.
After unzipping the archive and opening the project with PSoC Creator, open and navigate the tab: TopDesign.cysch and follow the graphic connections.
