For home automation tasks, using your phone or a dedicated tablet is a great way to control everything. Readily available and infinitely customizable, there’s a lot to like about such an interface.

On the other hand, you’ll need to activate the screen and possibly scroll through a menu or two before actually interfacing with your “thing.” In many situations, this can be a lot less convenient than simply flipping a switch or pressing a button, so perhaps the answer is… a smarter button.

yancan's Abutton V3 presents just such a solution, as a WiFi-connected push button based on Espressif's ESP32-PICO-D4. When pressed, the WiFi module inside its 50mm diameter x 12mm height cylindrical housing boots up, sends a message to an MQTT broker, then goes to sleep after it has done its job. The device features a single WS2812B RGB LED for feedback, and serial/UART ports for when you need to make a programming change.

The project wiki includes details on setting up the Arduino IDE to program your Abutton, and more info on the PCB and schematic is available on GitHub. If you just want to buy one and get programming, the unit is for sale on AliExpress, though you may be waiting for a month or more for it to arrive.
