Phoenix CNC's H.E.D.S. CAN Gauge Packs Plenty of Features in a Compact Self-Contained Gadget

With a full-color display the CAN Gauge is great on its own — but a built-in Bluetooth module expands it still further.

Phoenix CNC's Hayri Uygur has launched a CAN bus add-on with built-in 1.3" full-color IPS display panel, designed to offer at-a-glance monitoring of various vehicle functions and wireless connectivity to a phone or tablet.

"This is the newer version of my initial CAN Gauge Micro," Uygur explains, "[with] more features than before: Dual info screen with speed and RPM; Speed screen with speed warning; RPM screen with shift light; Coolant temperature; Engine oil temperature; Intake air temperature; Ambient air temperature; Throttle position; Voltmeter; Fuel economy; Vacuum, boost/turbo; Air-fuel ratio; O2 sensor voltage, bitmap edited according to your cylinder number; Gear indicator."

"Catalytic converter temperature; 0-60 mph, 0-50 km/h and 0-100 km/h timer; 1/4 mile run timer; Fuel tank level in percent; Distance traveled since DTC error cleared; Calculated engine load; Run time since engine start; DTC error code reader; Clearing of DTC errors; List supported PIDs; Screen off."

That's already a pretty hefty range of features for a compact, self-contained CAN reader — but there's more: The revised design includes automatic brightness adjustment for the display and status NeoPixel LED, an ADXL345 accelerometer waiting on a firmware update to provide G-force measurements; and an integrated Bluetooth module for wireless connectivity to an external smartphone or tablet for data recording and further monitoring.

The H.E.D.S. CAN Gauge is now available on the Phoenix CNC Tindie store, priced at $159.95 — a $30 premium over the older CAN Gauge Micro.
