Fischer Price’s See ‘N Say is a baby toy for little babies trying to learn their first words. ChromaLock’s See ‘N Slay is a Doom-themed toy for adults trying to learn their gaming SFX basics.

If you want to call yourself a “gamer,” then you need an encyclopedic knowledge of the classics. That means you have to be capable of instantly recognizing the enemy sound effects from the Doom games — there will be an exam before you can join the gamer club. ChromaLock’s See ‘N Slay helps you learn those sounds.

This project is similar to John Park’s modified See ‘N Say, just with different components and a much more metal style. ChromaLock used a Raspberry Pi Pico development board to detect the selected position. It then reads the appropriate audio file from an SD card and plays that through a small speaker, via a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and amplifier module.

The real magic here is in that Doom theme. ChromaLock used sprite graphics pulled from the Doom and Doom II .wad files. He then printed those on a sticker, which he placed on the repainted body of a See ‘N Say.

The audio files were a bit trickier and ChromaLock had some trouble getting clean sound. But he ultimately used sound effects from Doom Eternal, combined with his own narration describing the enemies in question.

Now ChromaLock can pull the cord and get a result like “The revenant goes, *roar hiss growl*”
