In 2000, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimated that only one percent of the ocean’s floors had been explored. The reason for that is obvious: humans are awful at being underwater — particularly for extended periods of time or at any substantial depth. Some species of whale can dive to well over a mile under the ocean’s surface, while you would struggle to make it past a dozen yards without scuba gear. Fortunately, you can now explore the marvels of the undersea world with CHASING’s DORY underwater drone.
CHASING’s DORY underwater drone just recently launched on Kickstarter, and the campaign has already reached more than twice its funding goal. DORY is a followup to CHASING’s GLADIUS underwater drone that was successfully funded and launched through Kickstarter in 2017. In comparison to GLADIUS, DORY is smaller, more affordable, and more intuitive to use. It’s roughly the size of your old high school biology textbook, and can be easily carried to the nearest lake, beach, or hot tub.
Once you arrive at your destination, you can simply attach the tethered buoy and drop DORY into the water. That buoy facilitates a WiFi connection between DORY and your smartphone. The buoy tether is 10 meters (32.8 feet) long, which is the maximum operating depth. A simple app on your phone can be used to pilot DORY and control the camera. DORY can automatically maintain its depth and tilt in place to help you get the perfect video or photo to show off to your Instagram followers. The battery is good for approximately one hour of underwater fun, and only takes two hours to recharge.
If you want the CHASING DORY for you next sea expedition, the Kickstarter campaign will be running until October 20th. Early birds can get one DORY and the required accessories for $349. Rewards are expected to be delivered in October.
