Sebastian Staacks’ brother recently got married, so he made him an excellent wedding gift in the form of an E Ink-based digital guestbook. The device is controlled by an ESP32 WiFi module, which allowed guests at the wedding to log into a simple web interface with their phones and input text messages as well as drawings. As some people were not able to attend due to COVID concerns, this also let others remotely log in to leave their greetings.

The unit features a 3D-printed base that holds the electronics, as well as six RGB LEDs that illuminate the screen’s surface. A half-dozen LEDs were chosen here in order to keep the total current draw under 500mA, enabling it to be powered by a simple power bank or using a wired phone charger.

Staacks notes that, while functional, the digital guestbook is somewhat unrefined, so may require some modification of the code and designs if you want to build one yourself. In fact, he actually had to pull out his laptop at the wedding reception to work around a bug in the system.

Bugs aside, the project seems to have been a great success, and you can see more about it in the video below and in Staack's blog post.
