Although most of us don’t have Tony Stark’s big bucks, what we do have is the ability to create our own J.A.R.V.I.S. with the help of Amazon. Want to use your voice to post Facebook updates? Want to hear the latest messages from your Slack channel? With Alexa skills, anything is possible.

That’s why we’ve partnered with our friends at Amazon to launch the Amazon Alexa API Mashup Contest, calling upon Makers and developers to build compelling new voice experiences by connecting their favorite public APIs to Alexa.

Whether it’s asking Twitter for the latest trends, Automatic if you need gas, Uber to summon a ride, or Hurricane Center about current storms in your area, if you have an idea for something that should be powered by voice, bring that Alexa skill to life… and it might just win you some awesome prizes.

Keep in mind, APIs used in the challenge should be public. Not sure where to start? This collective list of JSON APIs on GitHub will help get your wheels turning. The good news is that you don’t need an Echo (or any other hardware) to participate. The even better news is that, if you place in the contest, we’ll give you an Echo (and some $$$)!

Remember people, we’re looking for the most creative and most useful API mashups. A great submission will tell a story, have a target audience in mind, and make people smile. There will be three winners for each category:

  • 1st place: a trophy, an Amazon Echo, an Echo Dot, an Amazon Tap, + $1,500 gift card
  • 2nd place: a trophy, an Amazon Echo + $1,000 gift card
  • 3rd place: a trophy, an Amazon Echo + $500 gift card

And that’s not all. The first 50 skills published in both the Alexa App and the Hackster contest page are eligible for a $100 gift card. Plus, everyone who publishes an Alexa skill can get a limited edition Alexa developer t-shirt.
