The best light control is to minimize the control. System should learn from behavior and environment in the past and create the control pattern that match the personal preference. For example, turn on the light if we hear alarm clock. Open the toilet light when we wake up during the night.
Adaptive Light for Life (ALL) will sense the movement of your action and consider the surrounding environment to control the light match your personal preference.
System Architecture
ALL system comprise of 4 main components as shown in the picture
1) Sense tag. This tag will be used as sensor for movement and environment. For this project we use TI sensor tag (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/SensorTag2015).
Sense tag use BT 4.0 BLE to communicate and in the future TI will launch TI sensor tag for Wifi. We can use signal send from Sense tag to differentiate each person in the room.
Sense tag can operate in 2 modes
- When attached to wrist band. It will sensor the movement of the hand including fall detection. In this mode, the ID of the tag will be used for personal preference. The ID will be send via Bluetooth signal to Control Hub.
- When detached from the wrist band. This action can be sensed by using Reed switch which will contact together when put it near magnetic. It will be in stand alone mode. In this mode Control Hub will ignore the ID of the tag and Sense tag will be used for remote control of the light.
2) Control HUB. Nowadays Android TV boxes are cost effective devices. It’s performance is better and cost is lower than others platforms. Android also have good development platform and easy to distribute and update program via Google App store. We consider to use EVO thing studio in this development. Because this tools can support various embedded including TI sensor tag. The reason we need control hub because we do need to control more than one light at the same time and it’s more easy to control from the hub. For example, open the room light and close the toilet light at the same time
3) Cloud for keeping preferences and co working between each ALL system. Cloud will use to keep rules and preferences. For example, If you wake up at night before 6.00 AM after turn off light. The light should be dimmed instead of fully bright.
4) Light control part. This is the circuit to control light attributes. (On, Off, Color, Brightness) There are both Wifi and BT control. And the ability to control light are different. For example C Sleep can change the tone of the light. But C life cannot.
Some LED bulbs can dim or even change the colors of the light.
Future Roadmap
Because we use Android TV as Control Hub. Expansion in the future made it easy. Here is some recommendation for improvement in the future
- Receive IR signal from others remote control. For example, when you turn off the TV. The light will turn off in XXX minutes.
- PIR sensor that will turn on light when detect someone. For example, at the front door or garden.
- Connect to Smart watch. Most smart watches have gesture sensor. Inside. We can develop the same algorithm use in Sense tag to put into smart watches.
What does preference mean ?Preference in this project mean the characteristics that we would like to control. It can be just single control. For example turn on/off, dim the light to preset level or series of events. For example, we always reading a book before we go to bed which mean we always switch off the room light and open the bed side light for reading. But this happen only at night. In the morning, when we turn off the light, we do not want to turn on the bed side light. ALL project will consider these parameters and create personal preference link to that person.
What can ALL do ?To easy understanding and get better picture what can ALL do. We will give some scenario that may happen in our life.
- In the morning, Clock alarm ring. Sense detect the alarm’s sound, If the room is dark, Just increase the room light slowly and turn on the light at baht room. ( We always go to baht room after wake up in the morning)
- You pick up the Sense Tag and snap it on your wristband. When you leave the room if nobody in the room. The light turn off ( including in the toilet)
- When you leave the house, Control hub did not get the signal from Sense and if there are no others Sense Tag in these area. Control hub will turn off the light.
- When you come back from work. The light in front of door will open (with condition that it’s dark outside)
- The light will turn on when you walk pass and turn off or not when you leave depend on your personal preference.
- You are going to watch TV and you rotate arm to dim the light.
- Grandpa fell down upstair. Light start blinking inform you that some emergency case happen and you look at the Sense LCD panel for cause of the alarm.
- You take off the sense from your wrist in the bedroom. The room light turn off and the bed side light turn on for you to read. (This depend on your preference)
- You want to sleep. You lift Sense Tag up and put it down to turn off light. Toilet light turn on.
How to control the Sense
Because TI sensor tag is used for development only. We have created mock up for checking what it’s look like in the real world. See below pictures for details
