The Espressif SDK is a bundle of utilities and device-level APIs for our ESP8266 and ESP32 series of wireless chipsets. Optimized precompiled libraries and ready-to-compile driver libraries reduce time to market, while ensuring freedom of customization. Our SDKs compile with the free-to-use Xtensa GCC toolchain.

Espressif's ESP8266EX is among the most integrated Wi-Fi chips in the industry. Measuring just 5mm x 5mm, ESP8266EX requires minimal external circuitry and integrates a 32-bit Tensilica MCU, standard digital peripheral interfaces, antenna switches, RF balun, power amplifier, low noise receive amplifier, filters and power management modules - all in one small package.

The Launcher Hardware Kit can be used to evaluate either the ESP8266 chip, the ESP-WROOM-02 module or the ESP-WROOM-S2 module. When used in combination with the free RTOS SDK (Software Development Kit), IoT solutions can be developed and tested.

 

Based on the ESP8266 IoT (Internet of Things) platform, the ESP8266 RTOS SDK offers a simple, high-speed and efficient software platform for IoT device development. By receiving and transmitting data through the interfaces provided by the Launcher Kit, embedded software developers can focus on their IoT development without worrying about the set-up of the network, including WiFI and TCP/IP stack. Just connect the development board to a PC using USB interface or WiFi wireless connection interface, and you can begin configuring and testing the demo board.

Espressif's ESP-WROOM-02 is a low-power 32-bit MCU Wi-Fi module, based on the ESP8266 chip. TCP/IP network stacks, 10-bit ADC, and HSPI/UART/PWM/I2C/I2S interfaces are all embedded in this module.

ESP-WROOM-S2 uses a 2 MB SPI flash connected to HSPI, working as the SDIO/SPI slave with the SPI speed of up to 8 Mbps.

Add Internet to your next project with an adorable, bite-sized WiFi microcontroller, at a price you like! The ESP8266 processor from Espressif is an 80 MHz microcontroller with a full WiFi front-end (both as client and access point) and TCP/IP stack with DNS support as well. While this chip has been very popular, its also been very difficult to use. Most of the low cost modules are not breadboard friendly, don't have an onboard 500mA 3.3V regulator or level shifting, and aren't CE or FCC emitter certified....UNTIL NOW!

The Adafruit HUZZAH ESP8266 breakout is what we designed to make working with this chip super easy and a lot of fun. We took a certified module with an onboard antenna, and plenty of pins, and soldered it onto our designed breakout PCBs. We added in:

  • Reset button,
  • User button that can also put the chip into bootloading mode,
  • Red LED you can blink,
  • Level shifting on the UART and reset pin,
  • 3.3V out, 500mA regulator (you'll want to assume the ESP8266 can draw up to 250mA so budget accordingly)
  • Two diode-protected power inputs (one for a USB cable, another for a battery)

Two parallel, breadboard-friendly breakouts on either side give you access to:

  • 1 x Analog input (1.8V max)
  • 9 x GPIO (3.3V logic), which can also be used for I2C or SPI
  • 2 x UART pins
  • 2 x 3-12V power inputs, reset, enable, LDO-disable, 3.3V output
