Wouldn't it be nice to have a WiFi connectivity outside? My current WiFi router only allows me to get a connection right beside the door not suffient to walk around my back yard. I would like to create a light fixture that can replace an existing outdoor light fixture with WiFi access point.
The fixture would be able to replace an existing fixture and would function like any existing motion or time based fixture. The fixture would also have a WiFi access point built in. It would be able to connect to the internet using the same technology that Powerline Ethernet Adapters use.
Implementation of this can be accomplished using off the shelf components,
- Internet connection
- Internal router
- a pair of powerline ethernet adapters
- Exterior weather proof box
- motion sensing light
- wifi access point or router
- small power bar
On the inside of the house connect the internal router to the internet connection validate it works, connect one of the powerline ethernet adapters to the router and plug it in the wall.
Be sure to pair the powerline adapters before starting the outside part.
On the outside of the house, remove the existing light fixture and mount the weather proof box where the fixture was, wire up a power bar in the box to plug the second powerline adapter in, the wifi router. Mount these components inside the box. Add a plug to the light fixture and mount it to the outside of the box.
All the hardware is now completed.
The configuration should should be able to be done by connecting a pc to the internal router using the standard interfaces.
An ethernet to bluetooth adapter could be created to interface lights like C by GE bulbs.
Once a prototype is complete, the size could be minimized by combining all the electronics into a single board. That would allow for use of a smaller weather proof box or integrated directly into the motion sensor housing.
