Use Twilio to send text messages to control a drone. Made with the Intel Edison, the Linkit One board, and the Twilio Api.
Drones practically fly themselves, and have fairly long ranges when they take commands from WiFi networks. However for truly long range applications, WiFi simply isn't enough. Our team used a MediaTek Labs Linkit One board's GSM functionality to allow the drone to travel anywhere with a 2G telecom connection. The board uses a GPS to know its location, and transmits that information to a server via Twilio text messages. Server sends back directions which the Linkit One sends to the Edison via I2C. The Edison runs a Node.js server and runs the software required to fly the drone.
