Idea Selection:
Top Idea: Tourism
We decided to implement our tourism application for a couple of reasons. First, it was one of the most feasible ideas that we had given the physical constraints of the watch. Second, we believe it was a useful idea that people would find value in, especially on a mobile platform. When people travel, they want to know more information about the places around them, but their hands are not always free, such as when they are driving or hiking. Finally, the tourism application appeals to a specific target group of users that we can appeal to.
Runner-ups: Shopping Assistant, Interactive cross platform Games
Target User Group:
Our target user base would be tourists - generally of the middle and upper middle class. Ideally, our user would be traveling to some other country or distinctly new area from where they usually live. When they arrive at a new location, they would open up the app to see recommendations based on where they’re at. They can get recommendations on food, sights, hikes, shopping locations, and many other possiblilities. It’s useful because tourists generally want to see the sights and go to the most popular/recommended places when they visit somewhere new. Tourists would want this app specifically because it has everything that they would want in one location and it’s easily accessible. They can be on the go and not have to worry about having to pull out their phone because they can easily just interact with their watch.
Problem Description and Context:
Our application will address the disconnect between the travel experiences tourists wish to have and the experiences they end up having. Being in a new location, unaware of the geography and local hotspots, cultural and language barriers, all serve to inhibit tourists from fully immersing themselves in the new environment. Thus a solution to this problem should act bridge these gaps and that is the ultimate goal of our app. Granted solutions exist such pamphlets, museums, brochures at hotels, but wouldn’t be awesome to have all this information at your fingertips? Imagine an app that offers information and recommendations tailored to the tourist’s location: food, activities, shopping, historical info, and perhaps even additional features and/or integration with other apps involving maps, quizzes, dictionaries, money-conversions and much more. Now our target users will likely be middle to upper class tech-savvy people (they own a state-of-the-art Qualcomm Toq watch and can afford to travel), so they are likely to have the skills to use our app and being tourists, they likely want a more rich experience and would benefit from this.
Why is a mobile app a good solution?
This app fits very well as a mobile app. When you are a tourist, you are always moving around to different locations. You need a device that you have with you at all times for this app to be useable. The app being mobile allows it to track you as you travel and give suggestions and information based on your location.
Why is a watch a good solution?
This app works very well as a watch app. If it were a phone app, the user would have to take it out of their bag or pocket every time it has something new to say, which will be very often if they are traveling as a tourist. With the app on your watch, you can easily view any new information or recommendations that the tourist app has for you. The watch can rumble lightly to alert the user when it has new info to display.
