We drew up several initial, simple designs for several of our ideas:
Idea Selection:
Assassins Game
Project Description:
Target Group User - Our ideal user group includes various groups ranging from a small group of friends to larger organizations such as student organizations, sports teams and small companies. More specifically, our target group is any collective that is interested in an active and competitive game which helps strengthen personal relationships and camaraderie. An exemplary situation would be integrating new members into an existing establishment by providing a casual environment in which to meet and interact with everyone. Improving and strengthening these interpersonal relationships are intangible benefits that are integral towards an organization’s well being along with being the foundation of long-lasting friendships. We feel that individuals older than 13 would be able to enjoy and fully participate in the game.
Project Description & Context - We found that many social and professional organizations and friend groups would love to play the game Assassins, but lack an easy way to play it. Our goal is provide groups with a interactive, fun, and low-overhead way to build their teams. A key barrier we identified is the requirement for a game moderator, who must coordinate game logistics. Additionally, traditional Assassins games can also result in long, drawn-out games that do not engage most of the original players. This application specifically resolves the requirement for a moderator, which reduces logistical cost as well as speeds up response time. The connected nature of the application enables game interactions not possible in the traditional version, such as automatic safe zones and safe times, modified difficulty at different times, and complex team-based interactions that would be incredibly cumbersome with a human moderator.
Why is a mobile app a good solution for the problem? - This application depends heavily on users carrying devices with them at all times. Notably, the interaction requires that the user at some point be unaware of their surroundings, while the application is aware of their location. A conventional desktop application wouldn’t allow users to roam the physical world, which is a core element of the experience. A companion smartphone app is necessary to enable easier administration and coordination than with the watch alone. The application eliminates the need for a human moderator, reducing friction in comparison to the non-electronic version of the game.
Why is a smartwatch a good solution for the problem? - Users depend on timely notifications to play this game. The critical notifications produced by our application do not demand rich content and can be checked quickly with minimal disruption in a watch form-factor device. Users do not need to disengage from whatever they are doing to check game notifications (as they might need to on a smartphone). The reduced impact and ubiquity of notifications enable interactions not possible with the traditional and smartphone-only version of the application, such as more reliable and less user-loading “proximity alerts” and reaction-based minigames. In summary, the watch form-factor enables users to rapidly engage and disengage with the game, providing an immersive experience while simultaneously reducing the required distraction and load.
