Description
There’s finally an application that let’s you solve the classic age old problem: how old would I be on planet Y if I was this many years old on planet X? Solar You solves this problem in a quick, succinct manner!
How does Solar You Work?
Solar You is an Android application that consists of four screens. Each screen represents a step in the conversion process. The first screen is the opening screen or the introduction screen. It gives a quick overview of what Solar You does. The next screen is the input screen. Here, a user will input their age in the EditText field that has the hint “Insert age…”. In addition, a user will also choose from a dropdown Spinner, the planet that they are converting from. A user can not go to the next screen without setting values for both age and planet – a toast will appear if this is not the case. The third screen is the output planet screen. A user simply selects a planet from the dropdown menu and then hits “Convert!”. The final screen is the result screen. A user will then get their conversion and learn the age they would have been if they had been on the output planet.
I ultimately chose to break down Solar You into multiple screens instead of one screen because I felt that one screen was too cluttered and would provide too much confusion for a user. There are so many options to pick from in terms of planet that it didn’t seem feasible to use a single screen. In addition, multiple screens allow the ability to create a “flow” for the end user. This translates into a step by step process that doesn’t overwhelm the user, in my opinion, and keeps them engaged throughout the process. Furthermore, I opted for a dropdown menu as opposed to radio buttons because dropdown menus are more organized and tidy. Radio buttons, especially when dealing with 8 different ones, are complicated and hard to work with. The fact that we’re using Android further supports this point because it is difficult to split radio groups into multiple rows/columns.
