Dérive
The app to lead you on adventures with your friends.
Main User
I focused on providing large touch areas in my design because it makes it easier for users to make decisions both mentally and physically. The app allows users to go back and forth through the screens to make their selection by arrows above the buttons. The user can also edit their settings (curious/offline and route features) and view their entire friends list from every screen via slide-in menus. I also wanted to make the app as responsive to a user's choices as possible, so when the user checks the friends they want to join them in a list, the minimum arrival time adjusts automatically, calibrating for each user's current location. I also condensed the number of screens a user needed to step through in order to create their dérive experience.
Friends
I chose to include the notification of a dérive request in the phone app itself, rather than the watch, because I wanted to make sure that the friends invited had already set themselves to "curious". Otherwise, someone could invite a friend they think to be curious only to have the friend switch their settings and throw off the app. I also decided that each user would be able to set their own route features.
Watch
In the watch part of the app, I tried to connect it to the aesthetic of the phone app while keeping with the minimal design that the Apple Watch conveys. I used a black background to blend in with the full watch screen as well as conserve energy, seeing as the watch will constantly be in use while going on a dérive. I included a "don't show again" option for the instructions so that during future dérives, users would not have to go through the same information every single time. The design of the navigation itself is reminiscent of a compass, but instead of a needle there is an arrow that turns to direct the user on their journey. The north, east, south, and west elements are useful in directed the user toward interesting landmarks to inspect on the journey.
