Rings are often used to communicate something external, such as marriage status. Gemstones are an externally recognizable symbol of value. Everyone can see how big the rock is.
In contrast, this ring is worn around the neck, usually tucked under the shirt against one's heart. The meaning is internal and private. The protrusion which on a normal ring could mount a gemstone is left empty. Instead, the wearer can crush "essences" of their experiences into the ring. The scent of rosemary crushed into it, or the secret knowledge that a drop of blood has been smeared there, enable the wearer to privately carry a physical manifestation of their own personally meaningful experiences. The string is made of twisted duct tape, whose slight stickiness will also collect ambient experience.
